I just finished reading a great book which I highly recommend: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand; A World War II story of survival. resilience, and redemption.
This is one of those books that you can’t put down. The main character was a pow and the Japanese beat, bloodied and degraded him and the other pow’s; but they never gave up hope.
This reminds me of how our Lord Jesus was beaten and bloodied, spat upon, and mocked. There is a difference between Jesus and the pow’s.
Are you ready for this? Check this out.
The pow’s were captured against their will.
Now watch this. Jesus went willing. He was arrested but at any moment He could have called upon the angels to help Him but He didn’t.
3 So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
John 18:3-11 (ESV)
He was beaten for you and I; He was bloodied for you and I; He was spat upon for you and I; He was mocked for you and I. Jesus was fulfilling what the scripture said. He died for you and me so that we could live eternally.
Do you think the pow’s would have volunteered to be captured and beaten; would you? I am grateful for all of our service men and women who serve and have served. They protect our freedom.
Jesus knew what would happen to Him; He is God; He wasn’t surprised.
Are you ready to die to your self; to die is to live. Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior today and say good bye to the old you and hello to the new you.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
